Boost Your Happiness With More Sleep!
Of course we need sleep. Everyone knows that. If you’ve ever burnt the candle at both ends, and tried to function normally on far too little sleep, you know exactly how important those hours of shuteye really are.
Beyond just having the energy to function, though, sleep also has an impact on happiness – and there’s science to back this up.
The part of the brain that processes happy memories, the hippocampus, is far more affected by sleep depravation that the amygdala – the part of the brain that handles negative memories.
This means that when you’re short on sleep, you actually have a harder time recalling happy memories, but no problems dredging up negative ones. Over the course of the day, our memories (positive or negative) help us make decisions based on past experiences. What kind of decisions do you make if all you remember is negative?
Sleep also affects how our bodies feel (again, we all know this), but studies show that how you feel in the morning sticks without you throughout the day – this is the “wrong side of the bed” idea in action.
If not getting enough sleep puts you in a bad mood in the morning, it’s going to affect your entire day – no matter how “awake” you may feel later.
Getting more sleep means more, better energy, and this can translate into more productive and fulfilling activity during your waking hours. All of this rolls together to help you feel more positive about your time spent, feel physically better throughout the day, and gets your brain working in a way that can register and repeat those feelings of happiness!
Now get some sleep!
