The Happiness Test Perfect Score!
We all want to know the secret to happiness. Although everyone walks a different path and no magic button exists, we still crave an elusive, single answer to the question: what makes a happy life?
When SoulPancake gave a happiness test to volunteers for their Look On The Bright Side video, one remarkable woman received an unheard-of perfect score. The team decided to investigate further. “Why do you think that is?” asked host Julian.
The woman, Mama Hill, gave a brief summary of what she does every morning, saying “I wake up and I say, this day I choose to be happy, well, and complete.” She went on to describe the seemingly mundane luxuries of modern life which most people take for granted, including running water, toothpaste, and food. “We have to realize that we are truly blessed,” she added.
This last statement truly strikes at the heart of what makes a difference between the happiness of two people with similar lives and circumstances: perspective. This woman makes the effort to consciously acknowledge and appreciate the aspects of life that remain in the peripheral for so many of us. The happy fact that we have the time to reflect and consider our lives is often drowned out as we chase distant goals and lose ourselves to routine. Perspective allows us to live in the moment and bask in the warmth of what we do have, rather than pining for what we perceive as lacking. It is the dividing line between those who revel in life and those who merely trudge through it.
Mama Hill mentions meditation, prayer, and peace in her household. She takes the time to thank a higher power for her blessings. Finally, she watches cartoons. Her favorite is Clifford The Big Red Dog, while Julian suggests that she would enjoy Adventure Time.
“Cartoons never have a problem. There’s always and end to them, right? Something good happens at the end,” she explains. “And so therefore, I don’t have an attitude. I’m happy to be here.”
