The Power of Showing Gratitude: Soul Pancake’s “Calling to Say Thank You”
In a follow-up episode of a series titled The Science of Happiness, the people at SoulPancake issued an assignment to their viewers. The original video brought a handful of people on set, and asked them to write about the person who had the greatest positive influence in their lives – and then asked participants to call the person they wrote about, and read the message.
The assignment was for viewers to do the same, film it, and upload!
Watching the video is moving, as the people featured phone grandparents, parents, and friends to tell them just how important they truly are. The conversations are tearful – but they are tears of great meaning, not sadness.
The original video (not the viewer submissions) showed a huge increase in the happiness of those who called that influential person, and the biggest jumps occurred for the people who came into the experiment with the least amount of happiness.
Watching the viewer submissions, you can actually see the relief and sense of happiness on their faces as they pour their hearts out to the most influential and important people in their lives, and there is little doubt that the sense of happiness stayed with them long after the phone calls ended.
This all just goes to show (along with a whole handful of studies) just how important showing gratitude is, and how much of an effect it has on our own happiness.
Do you show gratitude for the important people in your life? What about the little things that make you happy each day? Being aware of, and more importantly, expressing the gratitude we have for these things is one of the keys to a happier, more fulfilled life.
If it were you in this video, who would you call? What would you say?
